There are documented ways to capture structured data in FHIR.
If you’re rolling your own solution using Observations and extensions, you’re probably doing it wrong.
Structured Data Capture (SDC) is driven by the Questionnaire and QuestionnaireResponse resources. These are amongst FHIR’s largest resources and they can be daunting to newcomers.
Next Wednesday (June 25th) there’s a free online conference all about SDC. It kicks off at 09:00 EST and runs for five hours.
You can sign up here: https://www.health-samurai.io/sdc-conference
There are 9 speakers, touching on a range of SDC and Questionnaire topics. You can jump in and out of the conference throughout the day as a topic catches your interest.
I’ve singled out a few presentations that I’ll be tuning in for below.
09:10: “Introduction to FHIR SDC”
– Foundational overview.
09:40: “Managing resource lifecycle with SDC”
– Tracking QuestionnaireResponse history using the Provenance resource.
11:55: “Usage of parameterised ValueSets in Questionnaires”
– How to enable dynamic population of lists.
13:40: “SDC in the real world: Capturing patient-reported outcomes”
– Can FHIR Questionnaires help lessen the workload and costs for implementers?
